UAE oil spill shuts beaches as Brent reaches a six-month high
A tanker spill nobody has named closed the Umm Al Quwain coast while Houthi fire on Saudi Arabia kept supply fears high, Reuters reported.
What changed since chapter eighteen
Since chapter eighteen, the UAE's environment ministry tied days of strange smells to a tanker oil spill on Friday 23 October and closed every Umm Al Quwain beach, Gulf News and The National reported. [5, 8]
Brent crude futures settled at $116.72 a barrel on Friday, up 3.14 percent and the highest since 29 April, Reuters reported. US West Texas Intermediate closed at $103.27, Reuters said, after Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia stoked fears of further supply disruption. [3, 4]
The coalition fighting the Houthis said it shot down two ballistic missiles on Friday, one aimed at Riyadh and one at Khamis Mushait in the southwest, Xinhua reported. Both were intercepted and destroyed, the coalition said. [10, 9]
The record
The ministry said its monitoring system detected marine pollution from a tanker oil spill reaching Umm Al Quwain's beaches, Gulf News reported. The smell in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain poses no health risk, the ministry said. No reopening date has been announced, and fishing is suspended in the affected areas. [5]
Sharjah closed Al Hamriyah Beach on Friday as a precaution, its Government Media Bureau said. The tanker has not been officially identified and the cause of the leak remains unclear, Xinhua reported. [6, 7]
Coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki said the Riyadh missile was shot down shortly after 4 a.m. on Friday, and two drones aimed at the south around 1 a.m., Arab News reported. Coalition and government figures carried by the Saudi Press Agency put October's toll at 24 dead and at least 374 injured, Arab News said. [9]
The Energy Department said on Friday that it authorized an emergency exchange of up to 400,000 barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for the Phillips 66 Lake Charles refinery. The crude comes from the West Hackberry site and must be returned with extra barrels, the department said. Its release named a crude supply disruption at the refinery but not its cause. [1, 3]
Who it reaches
Phillips 66 (PSX) is direct: its Lake Charles refinery receives the reserve crude 'for immediate delivery', the Energy Department said. The S&P 500 energy sector was up 2.5 percent on Friday to a record high, Reuters reported. [1, 4]
Fishermen and coastal users in the northern emirates are reached directly: the ministry and Sharjah's bureau told them to follow official instructions, Gulf News reported. Libya's crude output was also curtailed after a pipeline valve to the Al Zawiya refinery was closed, The National reported. [5, 6, 13]
Where the sources disagree
Reuters reported Brent up 6 percent on the week and WTI up 2.3 percent. The National reported 6.24 percent and 1.83 percent from the previous week's close. [3, 13]
Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea claimed hits on the Defense Ministry in Riyadh, Dammam's airport, an Aramco facility in Yanbu and Abha's airport over 48 hours, Xinhua reported. Saudi authorities reported four deaths in the Eastern Province, two from debris at an Aramco facility, Anadolu reported; Arab News named that site as Shaybah, not Yanbu. [11, 12, 9]
Houthi-run al-Masirah TV said Saudi airstrikes killed three and injured nine near Sanaa on Friday; the coalition did not comment and the count could not be verified, Xinhua reported. The IMO's confirmed list, as at 22 October, has no entry after 20 October, and none of its October entries reports pollution. [10, 2]
What settles it next
The Umm Al Quwain closure stays until technical teams finish their assessments, the ministry said, and the Energy Department gave no end date for the exchange. Egypt's parliament adjourned its vote on authorizing forces to support Saudi Arabia to Monday 26 October; a two-thirds majority is needed, Al Jazeera reported. [5, 1, 16]
The EU and GCC summit set for Saturday 24 October in Riyadh was postponed on Thursday 15 October; the EU said a new date would be announced 'in due course', Reuters reported. The GCC cited Houthi threats and the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport, The National reported. [14, 15]
