Aramco's Dhahran headquarters attacked, a limited fire reported
The war reached Aramco's headquarters, home to a major operations center, while Riyadh's airport stays shut and strait flows slip again.
What changed since chapter nine
Since chapter nine, an attack on the night of Tuesday 13 October set off a limited fire at an administrative building of Saudi Aramco's headquarters complex in Dhahran, the Saudi energy ministry said. [7, 10]
Chapter nine closed with King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh shut and Delta's Riyadh launch moved to March 2027. The US Embassy's alert of Tuesday 13 October says the civil aviation authority extended the airport's suspension through 17 October. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree had named the Aramco headquarters in Dhahran as a possible target, Reuters reported. [1, 6, 7]
Coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki said a ballistic missile fired towards Dammam was destroyed, Fox News reported. The coalition said fragments of a missile intercepted in Dhahran fell on a residential area, Reuters reported. In Riyadh, debris from two intercepted missiles injured four people, two women, a man and a child, and damaged 15 homes, Saudi Civil Defense said. [12, 7, 8]
The record
The energy ministry said authorities responded to the incident late on Tuesday and took the necessary measures, with no injuries or deaths, Reuters reported. The National carried the same account through the Saudi Press Agency. No statement from Aramco itself was found for this chapter. [7, 9, 10]
A company source told Reuters a ballistic missile struck an office tower in the complex and damaged its top three floors. The source and two other people said the building was on fire. The complex hosts a major Aramco operations center overseeing onshore and offshore rigs, pipelines, refineries and export terminals, Reuters reported. [7, 8, 13]
The embassy's alert says US government staff need special authorization from the chief of mission to use any airport in Saudi Arabia, and to travel to Yanbu. It says the airports of Jeddah and Dammam are operating with some delays and cancellations. It asks travelers to take 'extreme caution' if they use Saudi airports. [1]
Kpler's briefing of Wednesday 14 October, with flow data to Monday 12 October, puts strait transits at a seven-day average of 7,627 thousand barrels a day, against 8,482 in Tuesday's briefing. Red Sea volumes, the bypass this series follows, averaged 3,478 thousand a day against a pre-war 2,803 thousand, after 3,588 on Tuesday. Kpler again put East-West Pipeline flows around 5.8 million barrels a day. [2, 3]
The IMO's confirmed list stands at 106 incidents as at 13 October, with 24 seafarer deaths. Brent futures settled at 105.69 dollars a barrel on Tuesday, Fox News reported, citing Reuters. The National reported that oil prices rose on Wednesday after news of the Aramco attack. [4, 12, 10]
Who it reaches
Aramco has no US listing and is named here without a ticker. Delta (DAL) is adjacent: its Atlanta to Riyadh route, moved to March 2027, depends on an airport the embassy says stays shut through 17 October. FedEx (FDX) is adjacent: its Boeing 777 freighter serves Riyadh six times a week, Reuters reported, and no record read here says that schedule changed. [6, 1, 14]
Refiners and tanker owners are reached through freight: Kpler wrote that record freight is lifting delivered crude costs and squeezing refinery margins. Kpler also wrote that Fujairah and Oman loadings and Red Sea volumes run above their pre-war baselines, bypass routes offsetting part of the loss at the strait. [2]
Where the sources disagree
On what struck the building, the ministry said only that it was attacked, while a company source told Reuters a ballistic missile hit it. Bloomberg's sources said the fire was put out but could not establish whether the damage came from debris of intercepted projectiles. The National wrote that neither Aramco nor Saudi authorities had confirmed which building was hit. [7, 11, 10]
On the Riyadh injuries, The National and Fox News say the debris came from two intercepted cruise missiles; Reuters says two Houthi missiles. Fox News placed the Civil Defense statement on Tuesday, Reuters on Wednesday. On the toll, Bloomberg counted at least 18 dead in the wave of attacks, and Reuters 13 killed in Saturday's strike on Riyadh's airport. [10, 12, 7, 11, 8]
Kpler's own figures move as confirmations land: Red Sea volumes for 10 October read 3,457 thousand barrels a day in Tuesday's briefing and 3,986 in Wednesday's. Kpler wrote that its latest days are preliminary and have typically settled 1.5 to 2 times higher. [3, 2]
What settles it next
The Energy Information Administration's weekly petroleum report comes at noon on Thursday 15 October, moved by Columbus Day. The airport's suspension runs through Saturday 17 October, the embassy wrote. Undated: Aramco's own word on the Dhahran building, Kpler's next briefing and the IMO's next update. [5, 1, 2, 4]
