Aramco headquarters badly damaged, sources say, as Houthis vow more
The attack the ministry called a limited fire damaged the chief executive's offices, sources say; Kpler reports no direct effect on oil markets.
What changed since chapter ten
Since chapter ten, three people with direct knowledge told Reuters the attack did extensive damage to Aramco's Dhahran headquarters, with fire spreading across several floors. [12]
Two of them said the fire started on the ninth floor of the office block's south wing and spread between the sixth and 10th floors. Another said the top three floors, where chief executive Amin Nasser's office is, were severely damaged. Two regional officials told the AP the strike damaged the offices of the chief executive and other top officials, with no casualties. [12, 9]
The Houthis said on Wednesday 14 October that they struck the headquarters, and vowed to keep attacking Saudi airports and oil facilities, Reuters reported. On Thursday 15 October the Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed a cruise missile over Medina province; the Houthis denied carrying out the attack, the AP reported. The coalition also said the Houthis had attacked Riyadh's King Khalid airport 20 times in October, killing 17 people and wounding 333, Reuters reported. [13, 11, 14]
The record
The energy ministry's statement, carried by Reuters and the AP, reported a limited fire and no injuries or deaths; the Saudi Press Agency's own page could not be read. Aramco did not immediately reply to either agency, and no company statement was found. Operations at the complex continued normally while some employees worked from home, two of Reuters' sources said; a fourth said some functions moved to global offices. [13, 10, 9, 12]
Kpler's briefing of Thursday 15 October, with flow data to Tuesday 13 October, reported no direct effect on oil markets, because the attack touched nothing beyond the headquarters building. Red Sea volumes, the bypass this series follows, averaged 3,251 thousand barrels a day over seven days, against 2,803 before the war. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas asked member states on Thursday 15 October for more ships to escort vessels out of the Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea, CBS News reported. [7, 19]
Kpler put Strait of Hormuz transits, Iranian-origin vessels excluded, at a seven-day average of 9,203 thousand barrels a day, against 17,145 before the war. The International Maritime Organization lists 113 confirmed incidents as at 14 October and 24 seafarer deaths, with the container ship GFS Pride sunk in the strait on 13 October. On Thursday 15 October the Greek monitor Marisks warned that ships there face 'indiscriminate attacks' even with tracking devices off, CBS News reported. [7, 6, 19]
The Energy Information Administration's weekly report of Thursday 15 October showed US commercial crude stocks down 8.6 million barrels to 415.6 million in the week to 9 October. US crude output averaged 13,679 thousand barrels a day, 300 thousand below the week before, and Gulf Coast crude stocks fell 9.2 million barrels to 234.4 million. Reuters tied the drop to hurricane production shut-ins, and Bob Yawger of Mizuho told it: 'This is definitely a hurricane report.' [1, 2, 3, 4, 15]
Washington has shared intelligence and helped plan the Saudi-led offensive but has held off on strikes, the AP reported, and Trump has said he is evaluating whether to join. A US official told Reuters on Wednesday 14 October the administration is considering easing sanctions on the shadow fleet to cut record freight rates. Those are tankers that have carried oil from countries including Russia, Iran and Venezuela, Reuters reported. [10, 9, 16]
Who it reaches
Aramco is not in the desk's universe and carries no ticker here. Delta (DAL) is adjacent: its Atlanta to Riyadh launch is moved to March 2027, at an airport the US Embassy says stays shut through 17 October. FedEx (FDX) is adjacent: its Boeing 777 freighter serves Riyadh six times a week, Reuters reported, and no record read here says that schedule changed. [8, 5, 18]
Refiners and tanker owners are reached through freight: tanker rates sit at record highs, putting US crude out of reach for Asian refiners, Reuters reported. Energy Aspects wrote that easing the shadow fleet sanctions 'could make a small number of additional tankers available' for Hormuz shuttle runs. [16]
Where the sources disagree
On the damage, the energy ministry reported a limited fire, while three people told Reuters of extensive damage and a fourth said the fire burned into Wednesday's early hours. Kpler's sources put the hit at the top three floors, followed by a fire. On the weapon, the coalition said it intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at Dhahran, the AP reported, while a company source told Reuters a ballistic missile hit the complex. [13, 12, 7, 9]
The Houthis said they fired ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones at Aramco in Dhahran, Riyadh's airport and a Riyadh refinery, without saying when, Reuters reported. The AP and CBS News call the Medina missile a cruise missile, citing the coalition, while two CBS items credited to AFP call it ballistic. On the Riyadh airport toll, the coalition counts 17 dead in October, Reuters reported, while the AP counted at least 18 killed in the past week. [13, 11, 19, 14, 9]
What settles it next
Riyadh's airport stays shut through Saturday 17 October, the US Embassy's alert of Thursday 15 October says, with Jeddah and Dammam operating with some delays. The Future Investment Initiative forum is scheduled in Riyadh from 26 to 29 October, with virtual attendance and land routes on offer, CBS News reported, citing AFP. [5, 19]
Trump warned on Tuesday 13 October that he would 'never forget' the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, a warning TimesLive said extends beyond the 3 November midterms. Undated: Aramco's own word on the building, and its study of alternatives to Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb and Suez. Nasser told Reuters details 'will be disclosed if and when a final decision is made'.
